Liner Notes

Here's another one that started with lyrics, on this one I also wanted to challenge myself to a totally live, single take performance. I figured if I want to get more comfortable with this whole singer-songwriter thing that's the sort of thing I should be doing, right?

So, instead of using the whole studio this was just me leaning in front of my laptop with Garage Band recording from the built-in, hence all the background hiss.

A couple snags in the performance, but you get the idea. Still, a new take of this will be at the top of my list as soon as I finish #14.

As for the story behind the lyrics, it's all true, but the friends I talk about are two different people, the first was a high school buddy who tracked me down on Facebook recently, leading to the whole gang planning a reunion this June. The sad story in the bridge, about a friend who died, was my best man (1st marriage) who died in Iraq a few years ago.

Lyrics

Had a party before I left town
All my friends, we trashed those hotel rooms
Underaged, but drinking just the same
Most of that next day spent loving on that toilet seat

Crazy thinking how it all went down
A few days later at the station
Joined the Army, I was leaving town
I knew I’d be back some day

This house of cards is wearing thin
It’s small and cramped and tight within
Time blasts the house, walls fall to wind
Lets a wider world come in

He called me up just the other day
Hadn’t spoken since 19 years old
Seemed not a single thing had changed
But now he’s got two kids of his own

Crazy to think about my friend that way
Never thought I’d see the day
I left home, more like ran away
Now I can’t stop thinking ‘bout getting back that way

This house of cards is wearing thin
It’s small and cramped and tight within
Time blasts the house, walls fall to wind
Lets a wilder world come in
...Lets a wider world come in

News came in from an unknown email
Inviting me to a wake
When I heard my friend had died over there
It just knew, that it had to be
It had to be a mistake

This house of cards is wearing thin
It’s small and cramped and tight within
Time blasts the house, walls fall to wind
Lets a wilder world come in
...Lets a wider world come in
