Liner Notes

So for all of the gamers who love the game "Portal" I am ashamed to admit I've never, ever played it. A friend introduced me to the song "Still Alive" because he made an odd comment about moist delicious cake that I totally didn't get, then he pointed me to the closing credits for Portal, which featured the song.

I loved the melody, then checked out John Coulton's original acoustic version of "Still Alive" which you can find at...

Enamored with the melody I wanted to learn more, so I then watched all sorts of youtube vids on the game Portal so I would get the jokes in the song... and so now I'm sort of initiated into the Portal world without ever having played it.

The downside was I couldn't compose ANYTHING without this damned catchy melody popping into my head, so I embraced it by writing this spinoff.

Anyway, most of the lyrics very closely match the game song's lyrics from "Still Alive," so that's where the nonsensical lines like "Now these songs combine to make an oddball line" come from. For FAWMers who are also Portal fans this song will make more sense, and it's actually quite a fitting close for my FAWM year.

Update March 2nd - I re-recorded this one live (it was originally multi-tracked) as practice for an upcoming open mic, and I used a nylon stringed classic which sounds much better for this.

(I typically lack the confidence / cerebral power / talent to sing & play at the same time.)

Oh, and following Mike's advice, I picked up the game Portal (only $10!!!) and was up until 3AM last night getting to level 18... Yay new addiction!

This FAWM was a triumph
I'm making a note here - HUGE SUCCESS
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction

FAWMing in winter
We write what we must because we can
For the good of songwriting (except the songs that are bad)

But there's no sense crying over every bad song
You just keep on writing and ignore all the zongs
And when the FAWMing gets done you will have written neat songs
For the FAWMers who still listen in

I am a bit angry
I'm being so sincere right now
Though quite fun this FAWM threatens to kill me

My brain's shredded to pieces
I drove myself mad writing these songs
And as I wrote it hurt because I was so happy to to write!

Now these songs combine to make an oddball line
Though I still have music I just don't have the time
So I'm leaving this note, think of all the songs we wrote
For the FAWMers who still listen in

So go on and leave me
I think I prefer to stay inside
Look for other challenges to inspire me

Maybe 50 in 90?
That was a joke, ha-ha, fat chance
Anyway this month was great, it's so delicious and moist

Look at me still talking when there's writing to do
When I look outside it makes me sad this month's through
February is toast, but there's comments to post
For the FAWMers who all listened in

And believe me I am listening in
I'm doing writing and I'm listening in
I'm posting comments and I'm listening in
I feel FANTASTIC and I'm listening in
The month is ending and I'm listening in
And when it's March I'll still be listening in
LISTENING IN, listening in
