Liner Notes

OK, this one just has a bizarre story... obviously my "AquaMunkee" nickname is involved... See, after the February Album Writing Month (FAWM) ended, all of the songwriters who completed 14 or more songs were invited to perform at a showcase in Madison, and when we put the poster together I decided to superimpose a monkey face on my picture as a joke.

Well... one of the participants was late getting his photo to Jeff Powers, the guy making the poster (aka animalien, also on 50/90 this year)... and rather than sending it he decided to simply edit the graphic himself and replaced my monkey picture with his own. Well, the comical email thread that ensued was quite a bit of fun, and in the end Jeff returned to find his inbox full over this debacle, so he replied simply "The Monkey Stays" to end all debate over whether the monkey picture should be removed or not... and I told Jeff then and there I would eventually write a song with that title.

Anyway, there you have it. This totally absurd song was inspired by an offhand comment after an email thread got just plain silly.... that's life in the fast lane I suppose.

As for the details on this song, I wrote it myself, lyrics first, then I came up with a blues-inspired acoustic riff to sing over and threw down a few solos. Voila! Yet another ridiculous AquaMunkee original is born!!!

Lyrics

An average day in the park
Sun sinking low in the sky
I met this furry dude
Opposing thumbs and bright eyes

I Realized he could be dang'rous
Prob'ly 'scaped from the zoo
Tried to leave; he went to follow
What was I s'posed to do?

Snuck him into my apartment
No one 'round but he and I
Wond'ring how to keep him secret
Landlord finds out - I'll die

Days went by we were so sneaky
No sign of landlord for days
But when my one-year lease ran out
Eviction note said "Monkey Stays"

The Monkey Stays
The Monkey Stays
My life was so fine with my buddy
That landlord's such a fuddy duddy The Monkey Stays

Months went by I started dating
Shacked up at my girl's place
Things were good, we talked of marriage
'Til I saw that monkey's face

He must have split with my landlord
Must have gone their sep'rate ways
Once he moved in with my girl
T'was the end of salad days

Sudd'nly our match made in heaven
Turned to nightmare from hell
No matter what I did to please her
Monkey was our death knell

She tried to make me out the bad guy
With her threats and power plays
She finally said our love was over
"You should leave but monkey stays"

The Monkey Stays
The Monkey Stays
My life was fine with my lady
That monkey seems a little shady
The Monkey Stays

[solo]

The Monkey Stays
The Monkey Stays
My life was fine with my lady
That monkey seems a little shady
The Monkey Stays
My life was so fine with my buddy
That landlord's such a fuddy duddy
The monkey stays
The monkey stays
